GRID STEEL STRUCTURE Characteristic

The space grid structure is a well-established structural system. It is formed by connecting individual members through spherical joints to create an integral sheet-like structure, offering advantages such as reduced steel consumption, high spatial stiffness, good overall performance, and fast construction speed. A space grid is a highly redundant statically indeterminate structure. During construction, the initial stress in the members is difficult to control, which can lead to discrepancies between actual stress conditions and theoretical calculations, making it prone to quality issues.

Space grid structures can be classified into planar truss systems and pyramid systems based on their structural configuration. Planar truss systems include orthogonal grids placed in line with the support direction and orthogonal grids placed diagonally to the support direction. Pyramid systems include quadrangular pyramid grids and triangular pyramid grids.

Connections in space grids can be achieved using either bolted spherical joints or welded spherical joints. Bolted spherical joints are generally suitable for grids with smaller spans, while welded spherical joints are appropriate for large-span space grids.
